Things to do in Oviedo, Spain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite being a relatively small city in size, it offers everything necessary for a modern life without giving up its essence, history, and characteristics of the north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oviedo is the capital of Asturias, which makes it the geographical, university, religious, political, and administrative center of the autonomous community. It is home to the headquarters of all the official bodies of the community, and, in addition, the Princess of Asturias Awards are held here every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Commission says that it is one of the cities with the highest quality of life in our continent, something that is made possible every day by its more than 200,000 inhabitants that give shelter to locals and visitors (it is the second most populated city in Asturias after Gij\u00f3n).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Oviedo Cathedral<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the places I liked the most in my recent visit to the city was the beautiful Cathedral of Oviedo. Cathedrals are always a must in any visit to a city, and here it could not be less so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Known as the Holy Basilica Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador, it is one of the most recognized and emblematic monuments of the city. Just by seeing it, you will discover its imposing presence created through the different architectural styles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To give you an idea of how relevant it is, it is also colloquially known as Sancta Ovetensis because of the quantity and quality of relics it contains in its interior. Built throughout the eighth century, it is located in the heart of the old town of Oviedo, so you will find it on your route. You cannot miss it beyond the religious theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The usual visiting hours are Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (July and August until 19:00h). The price of the general admission is 8\u20ac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Alfonso II El Casto Square, the best place to visit in Oviedo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Plaza de Alfonso II El Casto is one of the most representative of Oviedo, as it is located next to the cathedral, in the very center of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is named in honor of Alfonso II, an Asturian king nicknamed \u201cEl Casto\u201d (it is easy to deduce why) and portrays much of the history of the city around it, as on it are located important historical buildings such as the Palace of Valdecarzana and Heredia, declared a Historic Artistic Monument, and the Casa de la Rua, or the Palace of the Marquises of Santa Cruz de Marcenado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We spent a long time sitting on one of its benches, watching what was happening around us and witnessing the daily life of locals and tourists passing by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Fontan Square and El Fontan Market<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Walking through the center of Oviedo, we find one of the busiest and most popular places in the city, the Mercado El Font\u00e1n. Do not hesitate to go inside and see the different stalls of local products and, why not, buy something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very close to the market is the Plaza del Font\u00e1n. It is a square of rectangular design (something very curious for a square) and owes its name to the spring source (font\u00e1n) that long ago filled the lagoon that rested on that land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Fontan Square, you can also access the beautiful Plaza Dao\u00edz y Velarde. There you will find several historic buildings and a couple of terraces where you can have a drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Museum of Fine Arts of Oviedo is a must-visit for art lovers, but it\u2019s also an excellent stop for those who may not typically focus on art. The building itself is a masterpiece worth exploring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This museum houses an impressive collection spanning from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. You\u2019ll find a variety of artistic styles and creative movements, showcased in both its permanent collection and its temporary, rotating exhibitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
