It is home to the headquarters of all the official bodies of the community, and, in addition, the Princess of Asturias Awards are held here every year.

The European Commission says that it is one of the cities with the highest quality of life in our continent, something that is made possible every day by its more than 200,000 inhabitants that give shelter to locals and visitors (it is the second most populated city in Asturias after Gijón).

Now, with a few more facts about the city, it’s time to start with everything there is to see in Oviedo. Of course, if you wish to visit the city, which I always recommend, book a free guided tour to discover this city. This free tour of the city is great. It has a duration of 2 hours, and you choose the price.

1. Cathedrals are always a must in any visit to a city, and here it could not be less so.

Known as the Holy Basilica Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador, it is one of the most recognized and emblematic monuments of the city. Just by seeing it, you will discover its imposing presence created through the different architectural styles.

To give you an idea of how relevant it is, it is also colloquially known as Sancta Ovetensis because of the quantity and quality of relics it contains in its interior. Built throughout the eighth century, it is located in the heart of the old town of Oviedo, so you will find it on your route. You cannot miss it beyond the religious theme.

The usual visiting hours are Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (July and August until 19:00h). The price of the general admission is 8€.

2. San Julian de los Prados Church

On the outskirts of the historic center, you will find the San Julián de los Prados Church, one of the most representative of the city. It is the oldest and largest preserved Pre-Romanesque church. It was built during the reign of Alfonso II the Chaste (very important for the region) during the years 791-842.

Its central nave is impressive, since it has the peculiarity that it rises without columns or arches reaching the ceiling. The resulting interior space will captivate you. You can see it with a guided tour that explains more about the building or on your own. The general admission is priced at 3 €.

💡 Beyond visiting the most touristic places in Oviedo, there are a few other places that are definitely worth checking out if you have some extra time. You can jot them down for a future visit or add them to your plans now. For fans of speed, the Fernando Alonso Museum is a must-see. Then there’s the ‘Skate Church,’ an old church-turned-urban art space that’s definitely unique. If you’re in the mood to unwind, the Balneario de las Caldas offers a peaceful escape with its soothing thermal waters.

Where to stay in Oviedo

Fontan Square

Search for hotels

Oviedo is a very pleasant city, and if your itinerary through Asturias allows it, it is well worth staying in it or its surroundings and enjoying a very comfortable stay.
