id="h-the-25-best-destinations-in-spain">The 25 best destinations in Spain

Of all the places to visit in Spain that we have reviewed in the previous sections, I wanted to highlight the following 25 destinations.

1. Granada (Andalusia)

Many say that Granada is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and the more times you visit it, the more you will agree. Granada is a real treasure full of spectacular places that will surprise you.

The Alhambra awaits you impetuously for you to walk around it for hours and let yourself be impressed. But that’s not all. You will also be amazed by the Cathedral of Granada, the Jewish quarter, and the different viewpoints, such as San Nicolas or San Miguel Alto. The Albaicín and Sacromonte neighborhoods will also make you fall in love.

Oh, and do not forget to eat rich, very rich, and cheap with the famous “tapas granainas” in any of its many bars and restaurants.

2. Picos de Europa (Asturias, Cantabria and Leon)

Let’s head up north to explore one of Spain’s most breathtaking natural wonders: the Picos de Europa. These mountains are so vast that every visit feels like a new adventure, with something different waiting to be discovered each time.

There are many hiking trails, all unique and absolutely stunning. Take the famous Ruta del Cares, for example—it’s a must. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just starting out, there’s a trail for everyone. Along the way, you’ll come across charming little villages like Bulnes or the Council of Redes, where the mountain spirit is still alive and well.

And you can’t miss the Fuente Dé cable car, the beautiful valleys of Valdeón and Sajambre, or the iconic Covadonga Lakes, all spread across Cantabria, Asturias, and León, the three provinces that share the Picos de Europa.

3. Las Catedrales Beach (Galicia, Spain)

Let’s stay in the north, but this time, on the Galician coast, to visit the next point: the Playa de las Catedrales. Much more than an “ordinary beach,” the Playa de las Catedrales is a natural monument included in the geomorphological formation of the Rasa Cantábrica, in the province of Lugo.

This is a flat surface that develops between the Cantabrian Sea and the mountains, which generates a linear coastline that leaves different beaches between spectacular cliffs.

The most interesting thing to visit is these rock formations that can only be accessed when the tide is low. Thus, with great care, you can enter the narrow corridors between cliffs, caves, arches, and naturally formed crevices.

4. Madrid (Community of Madrid)

We are getting into the big cities of Spain, and what better way to start than with the capital, Madrid? The city, one of the most impressive European capitals, has a lot to offer, and I invite you to spend at least a few days there.

As must-sees that you cannot miss, no matter how long your stay lasts, are the Royal Palace, the Almudena Cathedral, the Retiro Park, the Plaza de Cibeles, and the Madrid City Hall. Do not miss any of its museums, such as the Thyssen, the Prado, or the Reina Sofia.

Other plans that you will enjoy a lot are strolling along the Gran Vía, visiting the Plaza de España, and enjoying the neighborhoods of Las Letras and La Latina. From there, take the classic Madrid vermouth, cocido, and any of the delicacies of the capital.

It is also a perfect place to visit nearby towns full of history, such as El Escorial or Segovia.

5. Barcelona (Catalonia)

From one capital to the next… let’s explore Barcelona, a city that’s full of art, modernism, and a deep connection to the sea. It’s a place where light, color, and creativity surround you, and you’ll find inspiration just by walking through its lively streets.

Don’t miss the Boqueria Market, take a stroll down Las Ramblas toward Port Vell, and grab a tasty plate of fideuá. Be sure to visit the stunning Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar in the Born district, and take a moment to admire the unique architecture of Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. The Sagrada Familia and the Cathedral of Barcelona are, of course, must-see landmarks, and ending your day at Parc Güell is the perfect way to soak in the beauty of the city.

Even with all these spots on your list, you’ll only be scratching the surface, and before you know it, you’ll be planning your next trip back to this incredible city.

6. Costa Brava (Catalonia)

We stayed in Catalonia to enjoy one of the most spectacular coasts of Spain: the Costa Brava. This is a perfect getaway for a road trip (by car or, even better, by motorhome). It is one of the most enjoyable trips you can do in Spain.

In your tour you can include special places like Roses, Cadaqués, Begur, Llafranc, Pals, Peratallada, Tossa de Mar and, of course, Girona (it is a key city that exudes beauty in abundance). You will have everything: beach, mountains, villages, history, cities, culture and gastronomy. What more could you ask for from a trip?

7. Sevilla (Andalusia)

Let’s travel to southern Spain again to visit Andalusia’s capital, Seville. In the city of Seville you will soak up the southern culture, art, beauty, and sun.

Visit the Cathedral of Seville, the Maria Luisa Park, and the Plaza de España (where Star Wars was filmed). Go up to the Giralda, stroll along the Paseo de Las Palmeras, visit the Alcazar of Seville, go to the Torre del Oro, and let yourself be surprised by the most authentic culture in the Triana neighborhood.

With this, you will have enough reasons to stay longer or visit again.

8. Santiago de Compostela (Galicia)

Beyond the religious aspect of the city of Santiago de Compostela and the merit that all pilgrims have to reach it, Santiago is a city rich in history and culture.

It is usual to start from the Plaza del Obradoiro, and only when you look up, you will be fascinated by the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela… Impressive! From there, continue your way through the historic center to reach the Plaza de las Platerías, Plaza de Quintana, or Plaza de Cervantes. Don’t miss the Pazo de Fonseca, the Museo del Pobo Galego, or the Convento de San Francisco.

You won’t be short of places to add to your list, but make sure you leave some room to taste some good seafood and Galician octopus… A real delicacy!

9. Cudillero (Asturias)

Cudillero, an Asturian village made up of colorful little houses, will make you fall in love with its aesthetics, its energy, and its fresh fish delicacies. The exit to the port and the amphitheater is a pure spectacle, so walk through the whole town until you get here (and if you can, eat in one of the restaurants).

From the harbor, stroll down to the lighthouse and take in the view. Soak up the fishing culture in the old town and discover other sites such as the Capilla del Humilladero. Cudillero is one of the most charming towns to visit in Spain, so much so that it has been the setting for movies and series.

10. Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park (Aragon)

Let’s head back to nature to continue our journey. This time, we’re traveling to the province of Huesca in northern Spain to explore the stunning Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park.

In the heart of the Pyrenees lies the Ordesa National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famous for the impressive hiking trails that run through it (take advantage of the wide range of activities that can be done there).

It covers an area of more than 15,000 hectares, including Torla, Fanlo, Puértolas, Tella-Sin, and Bielsa, charming little villages to visit.

Within the park, there are glaciers, lakes, canyons, waterfalls, ravines, and spectacular torrents. Among them are the Cascada del Estrecho, the Cola de Caballo, the Gradas de Soaso, the Cañón del Añisclo, or the route of the Ereta de Bies.

11. Rías Bajas (Galicia)

In the Rias Bajas, in Galicia, the best thing to do is to eat a lot and very well. But to do so, visit iconic places of this Galician coast, such as Arousa Island, Cambados, the Cíes Islands, the Castro de Santa Trega, or the Pedras Negras Footbridges, among others.

Add O Grove and eat good seafood, visit the island of Ons, go to Combarro, visit a winery, and finish your route in Pontevedra. With this, you will have an excellent experience in the Rías Bajas of Galicia.

12. Ronda (Andalusía)

Few towns in Spain, and specifically in Andalusia, are as magical as Ronda. This town has a unique light, a color, and an essence that are given by its history and natural surroundings.

It is best to stroll through it calmly and learn its best-kept secrets of past times. Walk through the Alameda Park, visit the Church of Santa Maria la Mayor, be amazed by the views from the Mirador de Ronda, know the City Hall of Ronda, and walk through the Old Bridge and the New Bridge because they have a lot of history. Ronda is a city of legends and lots and lots of art.

13. Albarracin (Aragon)

In the province of Teruel, you’ll find one of the most beautiful villages in Spain: Albarracin. It is close to important major cities like Madrid, Valencia, and Zaragoza. Its altitude also gives it a special environment for hiking trails and enjoying nature. In the village itself you can (and should) visit places like the House of Julianeta, the Castle of Albarracín, the Cathedral of Albarracín, and the Walls of Albarracín.

Stroll through its streets, choose a hiking route on the outskirts such as the Guadalaviar River Walk, and go to the Calomarde Footbridges. You will love it all.

14. Cordoba (Andalusia)

Córdoba is one of those cities where just strolling through its streets, lined with white houses beautifully decorated with pots and plants, will make you fall in love instantly. It’s rich in art, culture, history, and—sure—incredible gastronomy. Don’t miss the chance to taste the flamenquines, salmorejo, and some eggplant fritters.

In order to properly see it, there is basically one thing that it is impossible not to see in Córdoba. First, there is the Mosque of Córdoba. From there, stroll up through the Jewish Quarter, take a walk on charming Calleja de las Flores, visit the Royal Stables, and visit the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos. Next, cross over the Roman Bridge to the Arab Baths of Córdoba. There’s still more to see—the Casa de las 7 Cabezas, Plaza del Potro, Plaza de la Corredera, and many other hidden corners.

Whatever you do, don’t miss this city—it will charm you from the very first visit.

15. Santillana del Mar (Cantabria)

And once again, we head north, this time to visit the charming town known for its sobaos and glasses of milk enjoyed right on the street. Yes, you heard that right! One of the best things you can do in Santillana del Mar—besides savoring some delicious anchovies—is to grab a freshly baked sobao and a glass of fresh milk from a stall in the square. Then, sit in the square’s patio and enjoy it like a kid.

Santillana del Mar isn’t just about tasty treats; it’s also one of Cantabria’s most beautiful villages, full of lovely spots to explore. Be sure to visit the Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana, right in the square where you enjoy your sobao and milk. Take a stroll down Calle de Juan Infante, check out the Palace of Velarde, or even venture into the Museum of Torture for a unique experience.

16. San Sebastian (Basque Country)

The city of San Sebastian is very beautiful. La Concha Beach and that promenade you look out onto through the mythical white railing will leave an unforgettable impression. Perfect for a stroll even if it is drizzling (which is usual, but no big problem).

Entering the historic center of San Sebastian, you will be amazed by its places of interest. The old town is spectacular, and you will feel it in the Plaza de la Constitución and its narrow streets. Visit here the Church of San Vicente and the San Telmo Museum. Continue up to Mount Igueldo and Urgull and visit the Miramar Palace.

Oh, and a must-do in San Sebastian… Go for pintxos. Make room in your stomach because there are many to choose from, and they are all delicious.

17. Selva de Irati (Navarra)

Let’s head to Navarra to explore one of Spain’s “jungles,” where you can truly connect with nature—and maybe even feel a touch of magic. This is the Irati Forest, and depending on the season you visit, you’ll encounter a completely different landscape. Autumn is the best time to visit, as the forest transforms into a stunning tapestry of intense colors.

In the Irati Forest, you will find many hiking trails, each one more beautiful than the last, leading you to unique spots like the Cascada del Cubo waterfall. In the surrounding area, make sure to visit places like the Ruins of the Royal Arms Factory of Orbaiceta for a bit of history amid the natural beauty.

18. Mallorca (Balearic Islands)

In Spain, apart from the mainland, as if we didn’t already have enough, we’re also blessed with two archipelagos featuring breathtaking islands. Each one is spectacular, and the best part is that every island has its own unique character.

In the Balearic Islands, Mallorca stands out as a must-visit. It’s an island that has everything you need for an amazing trip. Its capital, Palma, is a beautiful city with so much to explore. The Tramuntana mountain range offers scenic hiking trails and charming villages like Valldemossa, Sóller, Deià, and Fornalutx. And the beaches… Mallorca’s coastline is simply stunning, with coves that feel like a little slice of paradise.

19. Tenerife (Canary Islands)

From a Balearic island we move to the another archipelago, the Canary Islands. Tenerife, one of the capital islands of the Canary Islands, is a completely different concept where you can get into the culture and essence of the area. A warm climate 365 days a year, perfect to enjoy the sea, the beach, the sun, and, of course, the good gastronomy of the island.

Visit the Teide National Park, visit the Cliffs of Los Gigantes, and stroll through La Laguna (the most beautiful city on the island) and La Orotava. Put on your flip-flops and go to the different beaches in the area, such as Las Teresitas.

20. Lanzarote (Canary Islands)

Also in the Canary Islands, we will head to Lanzarote because you cannot leave the archipelago without seeing it. The island of volcanoes has such a powerful energy that you will notice it only when you arrive.

It is impossible to list all the places to see and enjoy on this island, but the Timanfaya National Park, the Papagayo Beaches, the impressive Famara Beach, the village of Teguise, La Geria, the Natural Pools of Los Charcones, the Jameos del Agua, and the other artistic creations of César Manrique are a must.

21. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (Basque Country)

Recently made famous as a filming location for Game of Thrones, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is much more than just a backdrop—it’s a place steeped in myth and even a touch of magic.

This stunning natural stone formation rising from the sea is home to the remnants of a fortress that once played a crucial role in defending the area. At its peak sits a small hermitage, and to reach it, you’ll need to climb the most famous 241 steps in the Basque Country.

22. Setenil de las Bodegas (Andalusia)

The white villages of Cadiz are a magnificent route to travel by car. One of the most special stops you can make is in Setenil de las Bodegas, the cave village.

This small village is built into the rock itself and is always defying gravity. It looks like the houses are going to be buried by the rocks above them at any moment. Walk its streets and you will discover the magic.

23. Salamanca (Castile and Leon)

Salamanca is the Spanish student city par excellence. In addition to a unique, young, and very active atmosphere, it is a city full of history, culture, and architecture. Start your tour at the epicenter of it all, the Plaza Mayor. Continue to the Cathedral of Salamanca, the Casa de las Conchas, and, of course, visit in detail the University of Salamanca.

Add to your tour the Huerto de Calixto y Melibea (the protagonists of the novel La Celestina), La Clerecía, the Palacio de la Salina, the Palacio de San Boal, the Convento de San Esteban, and the Casa Lis, among others.

24. Caceres (Extremadura)

Caceres is a Spanish city that may not be included in most travel guides, but if you have not been, you have to go. You will enjoy a getaway full of culture, history, gastronomy, and a lot of leisure because Caceres has a very active atmosphere. In addition, it stands out for its incredible state of preservation.

Take note of these places and plans because they will be key to a perfect route through Caceres: walking through the historic center, the Plaza Mayor, the Arco de la Estrella, the Torre de Bujaco, the Museum of Caceres, the Co-cathedral of Santa María, and the Palace of Carvajal, among others.

25. Cabo de Gata (Andalusia)

I can’t find a better ending for this list of places to visit (I couldn’t say the best because there are so many) in Spain than the wonderful paradise of Cabo de Gata.

The Natural Park of Cabo de Gata is truly spectacular and an ideal Spanish destination to enjoy the sea and the good weather. In Cabo de Gata there is a lot to see, but we cannot fail to highlight its iconic beaches (such as Playa de Mónsul or Playa de los Genoveses) and its charming villages, such as San José or Las Negras. Everything is really wonderful.

So far, this is the list of places to visit in Spain. I hope it has been very useful to inspire you to find your next Spanish destination. Do you think I should add any other place?

Making a list of the best places to visit in Spain has not been an easy task.
