Start your day with a visit to one of Madrid’s top museums and one of the most important in Europe. Going early is always a good idea; you’ll avoid the crowds and long lines, and you’ll have more space and calm to enjoy the paintings.

Home to an impressive collection of masterpieces, the Prado Museum features works by artists like Velázquez, Goya, and El Bosco. Take your time exploring the galleries and admire not only the genius of the masters but also the building itself, which is truly stunning.

General admission costs €15, with extra fees for temporary exhibitions. It’s best to buy your tickets online to skip the lines. And if you want an even richer experience, this guided tour of the Prado is highly recommended.

💡 If you have the time or are interested, after visiting the Prado you can wander into the Royal Botanical Garden. This charming green oasis features a variety of plants, flowers, and trees from around the world. It’s the perfect spot for a peaceful stroll and to soak in the serenity of the garden.

Barrio de Las Letras

After immersing yourself in the world of art, leave the Prado behind and head to the iconic Literary Quarter (Barrio de Las Letras), another must-see spot for your 2-day Madrid itinerary.

This area is truly special, as it was once home to some of Spain’s greatest writers, including Cervantes and Lope de Vega. Many of the streets and landmarks inspired these authors as they created their famous works.

The narrow, cobblestone streets are full of charm, boutique shops, cozy bars, and small but unique restaurants. Stroll through this culturally rich neighborhood and soak up Spain’s literary history.

Around this time, it’s perfect to enjoy a warm cup of coffee or dive into one of Madrid’s classic traditions: the vermouth. Take the opportunity to visit historic spots like Bar La Dolores, Bar Los Gatos, or Alimentación Quiroga.

Puerta del Sol

As the day moves on, it’s time to head to one of the city’s key landmarks, the place where everything seems to converge. Make your way to Puerta del Sol, the geographic and symbolic heart of Madrid, and an absolute must-see on a 2-day Madrid itinerary.

This bustling square is perfect for soaking up the local atmosphere and admiring the impressive Real Casa de Correos building, which now houses the Madrid regional government. Don’t miss Kilómetro Cero, the spot from which all Spanish roads are measured, and the famous “el Oso y el Madroño” statue.

Puerta del Sol is just a short walk from the Literary Quarter. Enjoy the stroll along typical streets like Carretas and take in the lively energy of this iconic square.

Plaza Mayor

Continue your day at the historic Plaza Mayor, another of Madrid’s most iconic spots. Surrounded by buildings with arches and balconies, this square is truly beautiful. Take a walk around the shops, relax, and enjoy a coffee at one of the restaurants with a terrace.

The best way to experience the square is at a leisurely pace. Watching the people go by is really fascinating. Depending on the time of year, the central area of the plaza often hosts various events and performances.

💡 Before heading into Plaza Mayor and after passing through Sol, you can stop by Chocolatería San Ginés to try some of the city’s most famous churros with chocolate.

San Miguel Market

The next stop is perfect not just for sightseeing, but also for enjoying some food. Immerse yourself in Madrid’s culinary scene at Mercado de San Miguel. This market offers a wide variety of tapas and local delicacies. Taste authentic flavors and experience Madrid’s vibrant food culture in this lively market, where you’ll find stalls for both eating and shopping.

It’s time to enjoy Madrid’s nightlife. End your day in the charming neighborhood of La Latina. Its narrow streets are full of life, tapas bars, and live music. Dive into the city’s evening culture and pick a cozy bar to enjoy some local food and soak up the authentic Madrid atmosphere.

In La Latina, you’ll find plenty of traditional “tascas”, and what better way to pair your wine than with some tasty boquerones in vinegar or another classic Madrid tapa. You can try places like La Gildería or Bodegas Ricla.

When the night ends, it’s up to you to decide when to head back to your accommodation. The key is to enjoy yourself, but remember that another full day of exploring the city still lies ahead.

This iconic park is perfect for enjoying nature and taking a moment to unwind. But it’s not just a park; it’s also a reflection of city life. I often spend time there just sitting and watching life go by, fascinated by how different the people living in the same city are.

From Retiro Park, head to the impressive Puerta de Alcalá, another must-see on a 2-day Madrid itinerary. Take in its classical architecture and learn about the history of this monumental gate. Make sure to take some time for photos and to appreciate the grandeur of this Madrid landmark.

Several of the city’s main streets start from Puerta de Alcalá, including Calle Alcalá, Calle de Alfonso II, and Calle de Serrano, which leads into the Salamanca neighborhood. This area is known for its luxury boutiques, elegant streets, refined architecture, and lively nightlife.

Palacio de Cibeles

Continue your exploration at the majestic Cibeles Palace, which today houses Madrid’s City Hall. This iconic building hosts cultural exhibitions and offers panoramic views from its observation deck. Depending on the time of year, its main hall also hosts all kinds of events, such as markets, film screenings, and exhibitions.

Cibeles Palace is within walking distance from Puerta de Alcalá, so enjoy the stroll through central Madrid.

Gran Vía

Gran Vía is one of Madrid’s main thoroughfares and a street that shouldn’t be missed, whether you’re spending two days in Madrid or even less. It’s the capital’s main shopping avenue, and although it can sometimes feel crowded due to the daily flow of people, a visit to Madrid wouldn’t be complete without walking along at least part of Gran Vía.

Gran Vía stretches from Calle Alcalá, starting at the Metrópolis Building, all the way to Plaza de España. About halfway down the street is Plaza del Callao. To the north of Gran Vía lie the neighborhoods of Chueca and Malasaña.

The best way to truly experience and enjoy Madrid is by exploring its neighborhoods. That’s how you can really get a sense of the city’s essence and soak up its lively, joyful atmosphere.

As you walk along Gran Vía, I recommend venturing into both Chueca and Malasaña. Each has its own unique personality and is full of terrace bars, specialty cafés, markets, and shops.

Temple of Debod

What better way to end your 2-day Madrid itinerary than by watching the sunset at the Temple of Debod? This 2nd-century BC temple was gifted by the Egyptian government and has become one of the most beautiful and special spots to catch the sunset in Madrid.

And that’s the end of our itinerary. We’ve tried to create an itinerary that lets you enjoy all the most interesting and iconic sights while also leaving time for leisure and relaxation. Madrid has something for everyone! You just need to take a little time to explore it.
