Best things to do in Segovia if you only have one day

Segovia is a perfect getaway to enjoy a unique destination for 24 hours, especially if you are in the center of Spain, such as Madrid or the surrounding area. Its connections with other points are very good, and you will be able to enjoy what to do in Segovia for one day with peace of mind.

This city looks like something out of a princess story (in fact, it is said that Walt Disney was inspired by its castle to build Snow White's castle) or a book from the Middle Ages. In addition, its small urban center and its entire ecosystem have been able to adapt to modern times (stores, activities, and services) without renouncing the purest essence of the town and its history.

The most emblematic buildings house the public institutions in a solemn way, and the stores have been permeabilized to the architecture of the time, safeguarding intact the style of Segovia.

Personally, for me living in Madrid, whenever I want to get out of the city and I feel like taking a nice walk, Segovia is a safe bet. It is just over an hour away by car, and you can really enjoy a day there. That's why today we will go on a very complete tour of the city to discover in detail, but without haste, everything you can see if you spend one day in Segovia.

So, let's immerse ourselves in the impressive richness of its historical heritage, taste its most popular gastronomy, and take a stroll through the most interesting stores in the area to take some souvenirs. Are you coming to Segovia?

How to get to Segovia

Segovia is in the center of the Iberian Peninsula, so getting there is relatively easy from anywhere. It also has excellent connections, as it has first-class highways (free and toll) as well as high-frequency commuter trains. In fact, Segovia is even served by the AVE (high-speed train) from Madrid or León.

For all these reasons, Segovia is the ideal getaway for those who want to add another destination to their Castilian route or even for those of us who live here and want to escape from the big city for a day.

🎟️ If you are going to visit Segovia from Madrid, you can go on your own or choose to book an organized tour to Segovia, so you only have to worry about enjoying yourself. You can also make a combined tour to Segovia + Toledo or a Segovia + Avila.

Getting from Madrid to Segovia

Segovia is one of the best excursions you can do from Madrid. Here’s how to get there.

By car:

Madrid and Segovia are connected by the A-6 highway and freeway and the AP-61, a route that promises not only efficiency but also panoramic views of the Castilian landscape. The drive, which takes about an hour, invites you to discover the charms of the road. You also have the option of detouring to small, charming villages along the way. Something that I highly recommend on the way back.

Please note that the historic center of the city is forbidden for the entry and transit of private vehicles. You can enter if you have an agreed-upon accommodation or go to a parking lot. I recommend you leave your car parked outside the town center.

Stopping in Cercedilla, Navacerrada, or, of course, in La Granja de San Ildefonso is wonderful and will complete your day in a unique way.

By train:

For those who prefer to enjoy the scenery without worrying about driving, the train is an excellent option. The AVE high-speed line connects Madrid with Segovia in approximately 30 minutes. Also, the commuter train of the Community of Madrid arrives in the city regularly, several times a day.

The Segovia-Guiomar train station is very convenient, as it is located very close to the city center.

By bus:

Travelers looking for economical options can opt for the bus. There are regular services connecting Madrid and Segovia. The journey is a little longer than by train, but it allows you to relax and enjoy the scenery for about an hour and a half.

🛏️ I stayed at the Exe Casa de los Linajes, a 3 star hotel very well located. I recommend it! Below you will find other hotel recommendations in Segovia.

What to do in Segovia for one day

Despite its apparent small size (Segovia is a relatively small city), it has a lot to see and, above all, to discover. Walking around Segovia, I really admire something historical in every corner.

It is the moment to enter this city that is so famous thanks to its aqueduct but that treasures an infinity of secrets to discover. A wide range of monuments and historic buildings that defy time are ready to offer an unforgettable experience.

During this intense day, we will explore the architectural wonders of the city, get lost in the medieval essence, and let Segovia transport us to an era where every stone tells a story. To give you time for everything, we have designed this fascinating tour as we unravel the highlights of Segovia in just one day.

It will be an intense and full day, so it is best to wear comfortable shoes that allow you to walk a lot. Depending on the time of year, dress warmly or protect yourself from the sun (in Segovia, it is very cold in winter and the sun can be very strong in summer).

🎟️ Before going into the historic center, it can be a very good option to book this guided tour of the city, which lasts 2 hours and a half and includes a visit to the cathedral and Alcazar.

1. The Aqueduct, the most incredible place to see in Segovia

The Aqueduc in Segovia
The Aqueduc

We start our day in the historic heart of Segovia, marveling at the ancient Roman Aqueduct. What a better starting point! It is also in the lower part of the city and is perfect to start the day. This imposing monument, with its stone arches rising majestically, transports us directly to the imperial era.

For me, the most curious thing about this aqueduct is, first, how impressive it is. Being underneath makes you feel very small, and at least it made me question the intelligence of our ancestors (we think we are the smartest and most capable of history). It is an absolutely humbling experience. In addition, I would also highlight how well preserved it is and the fact that, despite the centuries, it is still standing and in excellent condition.

And finally, let’s keep in mind that what you can see of the Aqueduct of Segovia is only a small part of its totality (10 miles). We can see and enjoy 167 arches, almost 30 meters high, that are part of the great aqueduct that surrounds the entire city subway. In the tourist office next to the aqueduct, there is a large model that shows where the subway runs.

💡 Do not hesitate to go up to the Postigo del Consuelo viewpoint to enjoy a very special perspective of the Aqueduct, one of the best things to do in Segovia in one day.

2. Plaza Mayor and the Cathedral of Segovia

Cathedral of Segovia
Cathedral of Segovia

After seeing the aqueduct, analyzing it in depth, and learning a little more about it and its history, it is time to enter the historic center of Segovia. We descend through the picturesque streets of the city (all pedestrian and very comfortable) to the Plaza Mayor, where the Cathedral of Segovia welcomes us with its Gothic magnificence. It is really impressive to arrive at this square and see the cathedral in the background (much larger than I thought for a city of these characteristics).

There is a lot to tell about the cathedral. The best thing to do is to visit it on your own (the entrance to the interior costs €4, and you can buy it in advance here) or take this tour of the cathedral and its tower, which includes the entrance to the Episcopal Palace. Elegant and majestic, the Cathedral of Segovia is an emblem of Gothic architecture in the historic heart of the city.

Begun in the 16th century, its Gothic façade dazzles with intricate sculptures that tell sacred stories. Inside, the Chapter House and the imposing High Altarpiece, carved by Juan Gil de Hontañón, reveal an artistic profusion that embraces religious devotion.

Ascending the towers provides breathtaking views of Segovia. You can also explore the serene crypt and side chapels, each housing artistic treasures and historical relics. Segovia Cathedral, known as the Lady of Cathedrals, is not only a site of worship but a living testimony to the rich history and artistic mastery that characterize this enchanting city.

💡 Before entering the cathedral, I recommend, if you have not yet had breakfast, choosing one of the cafes in the square to have a good toast of local bread with tomato, olive oil, and ham with a hot coffee or tea. Especially if it is winter, it is the best time to recover energy after the early start and the first stop. We chose Bar Jeyma, and it was a very nice breakfast.

3. Alcazar, a must-see in Segovia in one day

Alcazar

As you have surely enjoyed the most typical dishes of Castilian gastronomy, it will be great to continue the route with a walk to the Alcazar of Segovia. This is a fortress that looks like something out of a fairy tale, or vice versa, as Walt Disney himself was inspired by it to design and draw Snow White’s castle.

With its towers soaring skyward and its walls reflecting in the waters of the Eresma River, the Alcazar evokes the essence of a dream castle. Initially built as a defensive fortress, its profile has been shaped over the centuries by architectural styles ranging from Romanesque to Gothic.

To explore the Alcazar is to immerse oneself in the real and legendary history of Segovia. Its interior rooms, such as the throne room and the collection of arms, reveal life in the Middle Ages. On the other hand, the panoramic views from the towers offer a unique perspective of the city and its surroundings.

Whether strolling through its gardens or imagining ancient deeds in its halls, the Alcazar of Segovia transports us to a world where tales of knights and princesses come to life within its stone walls.

It can be visited inside with a previous entrance ticket, taking into account that it will take you at least an hour and a half to complete the tour. At the end of your visit, I recommend you also enjoy the gardens and, of course, the views from the different viewpoints that are around.

Just outside the Alcazar, there is a small square with a cafe with a very nice terrace, perfect for an aperitif or a snack. It is called Bar Socorro and is in the square of the same name.

💡 If you want to enjoy unforgettable views of the Alcazar and the cathedral tower, we highly recommend going to the Mirador del Alcázar y los Dos Valles. You can get there walking from the Puerta de San Andrés (also beautiful) through a very pleasant walk. From the Pradera de San Marcos, you will also have a different and very nice perspective of the Alcazar.

4. Calle Real and Jewish Quarter, a must if you spend one day in Segovia

After finishing the visit to the Alcazar (which is at the other end of the city from the Aqueduct), we ventured out to walk along the lively Calle Real, discovering craft stores and cozy cafes. If you want to stop for a coffee or a rich tea (the good kind) as well as a homemade sponge cake, the Cafés La Colonial coffee shop is very nice.

On this walk through the center, without realizing it, you will be immersed in the atmosphere of the Jewish Quarter. Explore its cobblestone alleys and absorb the history that permeates every corner. It is a very interesting neighborhood where its narrow streets are filled with historic buildings of Jewish culture that still remain intact.

If you are interested, you can also visit the Centro Didáctico de la Judería, which shows and explains much more about this settlement in the city.

5. Church of San Martin and Plaza de Medina del Campo

Church of San Martin

Afterwards, we will continue walking and pause at the picturesque Plaza de Medina del Campo (also known as Plaza de Juan Bravo), surrounded by medieval architecture. This quiet enclave invites us to relax and enjoy the authenticity of Segovia. In this square, one of the main protagonists is the Church of San Martin, another of the most interesting places to see in Segovia in one day.

Also here we found a very interesting place, a candle and handmade essences store that offers candle workshops (there were no places, and we were really looking forward to this experience). One more reason to come back. The place is called the Olphactory Store.

🎈 Looking for a fun and special activity in Segovia? I recommend booking this hot air balloon ride and fly over the city. The views you will have from above the old town will impress you a lot..

6. Vera Cruz Church

Let’s head to the Church of the Vera Cruz, another architectural treasure of Segovia. This temple, with its distinctive octagonal plan, is a testament to medieval spirituality. Founded in the 13th century, the church houses a serene atmosphere and a collection of capitals and arches that reveal the artistic prowess of the period.

The Church of the Vera Cruz, with its unique design and historical connection, presents itself as a sacred corner that invites reflection and admiration for the architectural mastery of times past.

7. Valle de Eresma Viewpoint

Monastery of Santa María del Parral

To capture the essence of Segovia in its entirety, it is essential to ascend to the Mirador del Valle de Eresma (also known as Mirador Junto Plaza Reina Victoria Eugenia, due to its location). From this elevated point, we enjoy panoramic views that encompass the surrounding landscape and give us a unique perspective of the city.

Be sure to visit this point at any time of your visit because you will have breathtaking views while enjoying an energy of absolute tranquility.

From here, you will be able to see the impressive Monastery of Santa Maria del Parral and the Hieronymite Monks (they have a morning visit, which is pay-what-you-will; confirm with the tourist office).

8. Church of San Andres

Church of San Andres

We concluded our day with a sunset walk through the center of the city, arriving at another landmark, the Church of San Andrés. It is in the Plaza de la Merced, which, although it is in the center, is reached by “walking down the street,”  as it is at the back of Calle Real.

Formerly housed the convent of Nuestra Señora de la Merced and remains standing, the church of Romanesque origin (despite many changes and transformations suffered). Its tower is very significant and is full of historical pieces of important value, such as the demolished altar of the old convent or images of the Hospital de Peregrinos.

On this intensive day, we have explored the essence of Segovia, from its iconic monuments to its charming alleys. Each step has been a journey through time, immersing us in the rich history and architectural beauty of this unique city.

Extra: Santa Maria del Parral Monastery

If you still have time to spare, or better yet, if you stay in Segovia to sleep, you can leave for the next day in the morning to visit the Monastery of Santa Maria del Parral. Located on the outskirts of the city, it offers a guided tour in the mornings for a fee.

Founded in the 15th century by order of Henry IV, this monastery captivates with its Gothic architecture and the serene harmony of its gardens. The monastery church, with its sober elegance, is a testimony to the religious devotion that has endured over the centuries.

With its silent cloisters and panoramic views, the Monastery of Santa María del Parral offers a palette of peace and reflection in the midst of picturesque Segovia.

Where to stay in Segovia

This small town has a wide range of accommodations to choose from. The truth is that it is a perfect place to rest, walk, and enjoy the history of Spain.

On our last visit, we chose a 3-star hotel that pleasantly surprised us with its facilities, attention, and location. Really great. It is the hotel Exe Casa de los Linajes, and if we return to the city, we will surely repeat it (in addition, we made the reservation through Booking with parking included, and access is in the same historic center).

Other hotel options we had on our radar were the Áurea Convento Capuchinos or the Hotel Don Felipe (which has a terrace with unbeatable views).

Where to eat in Segovia

One of the biggest attractions of Segovia is, without a doubt, its gastronomy. The rich and hearty dishes of Castilian cuisine have their maximum splendor here, and if there is something famous, it is the roast suckling pig of Segovia.

If you go on a weekend and want to taste the most authentic dish of Segovia, I recommend one hundred percent booking in advance. One of the most typical (which I have also tried) is Restaurante Asador José María. Just walking down the street, you will notice the smell of roast. The value for money is quite good, but the food is very consistent.

Other places where the suckling pig also has a very good reputation are El Bernardino or Restaurante Maribel.

Of course, the best experience is to go to Mesón de Cándido. It is famous for the image we all have of cutting the suckling pig with a plate (because of how juicy and soft it is after roasting). It used to be a bit more expensive, but now they offer the suckling pig in quite affordable portions (always make reservations).

I visited Segovia for two days, and eating cochinillo (roasted piglet) again was too much. I love healthy food and look for other options, so we ventured to book a meal at a restaurant that includes a wide range of vegetarian and vegan dishes. We have to admit that it was a good choice. The food is exquisite, the price is great, and the energy that is cooked there is a marvel. It is called La Almuzara, and even its location, behind the cathedral, is fantastic.

And as it could not be missed in our travels, we did a search for specialty coffee shops to enjoy a rich coffee, a chai, and a matcha. In Segovia, we only found one—tiny but well-stocked and very nice. It is called Yum and serves Hola Coffee. So success is assured.
