One of the main tourist attractions in Fuerteventura are its beaches. This Canary Island has some of the most spectacular in the archipelago. Its more than 300 kilometers of coastline hide around 150 beaches scattered throughout the island. You will find them with white sand and black sand, crystal clear and calm waters, and strong and wild waters. Visiting them all during your trip is an impossible mission. For this reason, in this article, I'll talk about the best beaches in Fuerteventura.

Some of these beaches are ideal for swimming, while others are perfect for water sports such as surfing or kitesurfing. Even if you don't plan on engaging in these sports, you'll also love sitting by the beach and watching others enjoy these activities. On the other hand, I am sure that some of these beaches will give you the best sunsets during your visit in Fuerteventura.

Best beaches in Fuerteventura

Ready to discover the best beaches in Fuerteventura? Let’s begin!

1. Cofete Beach, one of the best beaches in Fuerteventura

Cofete Beach

One of the best places to visit in Fuerteventura is Cofete Beach. No one should miss this incredible beach located in the southern part of Fuerteventura, specifically on the Jandia peninsula. This is because in it you will find one of the most impressive landscapes on the island.

Cofete is 14 kilometers long and around 50 meters wide, where you enjoy pleasant walks. On one side you will have the Atlantic Ocean while on the other, you will be amazed by the peaks of Jandía Natural Park. The landscape is a treasure.

How to get to De Cofete Beach

In order to get to Cofete Beach, you first have to go to Morro Jable. From there you will have to drive on a dirt road for about 20 kilometers. It takes around 45 minutes to get to Playa de Cofete from Morro Jable. The road is a bit rough in the final section but it can be done with a car, just drive carefully.

During the journey, be sure to stop at Cofete Viewpoint. At the viewpoint you can enjoy an incredible landscape. You will then understand why Cofete is one of the best beaches in Fuerteventura. Its immensity is overwhelming.

If you do not have your own vehicle or do not want to drive on the dirt road, you can book one of the following organized tours:

2. Sotavento Beach, a beautiful beach in Fuerteventura

Sotavento Beach

If we make a list of the most beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura, Sotavento Beach has to be part of it. It is not only one of the most spectacular beaches on this island but also in the Canary archipelago. It is also a paradise for windsurfers and swimmers looking for calm, shallow waters. Of course, I warn you that it gets pretty windy.

This beach also stands out for its huge sand bars and water pools formed by the tide. It is not only one of the most visited beaches on the island but also one of the most photogenic. It is impossible for this paradisiacal and picturesque landscape not to surprise you.

How to get to Sotavento Beach, Fuerteventura

Getting to Sotavento Beach by car is quite simple. You simply have to put “Parking Sotavento” in google maps. It is a sandy parking lot and if I’m not mistaken, the final stretch of the path is also covered in sand but it is not a problem. You can get there well with any vehicle.

Before or after your visit to the beach, I recommend stopping by Salmo Viewpoint, where you can appreciate Sotavento Beach from above.

3. Viejo Rey Beach, one of the best beaches in Fuerteventura for surfing

Viejo Rey Beach was one of my favorite beaches in Fuerteventura. In it I could feel and enjoy that wild and free spirit that Fuerteventura offers. It is a fairly long beach, divided into several sections thanks to the cliffs that protrude out over the sea.

Although the water can be a little rough for swimming, it is a beautiful beach to go for a walk. I also recommend sitting on the entrance stairs to watch the sunset and the surfers catch waves.

Very close to this beach you’ll find La Pared Beach and Guadalupe Point, places that I also recommend visiting.

How to get to Playa del Viejo Rey

Getting to Viejo Rey Beach is very simple. You just have to go to the municipality of La Pared. From there, follow a dirt track that leads to the parking lot. It only takes a couple of minutes. From the parking lot, you will have to go down some steps to access the beach.

🏥 Remember it is very important to purchase travel insurance for Spain if you don’t have medical coverage in this country. I always use and recommend the company Heymondo, where I can offer you a 5% discount on your travel insurance.

4. La Concha and El Puertito, located in Lobos Island

Lobos Island
El Puertito

The next two places that I am going to mention are located in Lobos Island, an islet located northeast of Fuerteventura that is well worth visiting. The best beach on this small island is Concha de Lobos Beach, one of the best beaches for bathing in Fuerteventura. It is semicircular in shape and has clear and calm waters. It is the perfect place to lay your towel and enjoy a good swim and sunshine.

Another place that must be highlighted in Lobos Island is El Puertito.

How to get to Lobos Island

To get to Lobos Island, you have to take a ferry from Corralejo. I recommend booking your ferry to Isla de Lobos in Civitatis, as I did. It seems to me the best option since they are also in charge of processing the authorization that is needed to visit the island. The boat ride takes 20 minutes.

If you are going to visit Lobos Island, I recommend reading my post about what to see and how to get to Lobos Island, Fuerteventura.

5. Castillo Beach (El Cotillo), perfect for sunset watching

Another beach that should not be missing in your Fuerteventura itinerary is Castillo Beach, located very close to El Cotillo. I liked this beach so much that I went a couple of times during my trip to the island. Both times at sunset, when I recommend visit the beach.

The first time, arriving a little late, my friend and I stayed on the cliffs located next to it to watch the sunset. The second time, with more time, we decided to go down to the beach and enjoy this pristine and wild place more peacefully. A real treasure!

How to get to Castillo Beach, El Cotillo

To get to Castillo Beach, you first have to head to El Cotillo. Once you get there, you must take a dirt trail that heads south. It is one of the first beaches you will come across.

6. Escalera Beach, also one of the best beaches in Fuerteventura

Best beach

Escalera Beach is quite close to Castillo Beach, also located on the outskirts of El Cotillo. It is famous for being one of the most beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura, it’s at least crowd-favorite. In my case, I wasn’t able to visit it but I’m sure I will visit the beach on my next trip to the island.

It is a beautiful beach surrounded by cliffs and less frequented than other well-known beaches in Fuerteventura. The steps built to access it, which give the beach its name, add an extra charm to the place.

How to get to Escalera Beach

Access is somewhat complicated, since you have to go along the same dirt trail that starts in El Cotillo to the south. After traveling a little over 4 kilometers along this path, you will arrive at a parking lot. Then you will have to go down the 135 steps.

7. Popcorn Beach, a unique beach in Fuerteventura

Unique beach

Perhaps not known as one of the best beaches in Fuerteventura as such. However, I did not want to leave Fuerteventura’s famous Popcorn Beach out of this list, as it seems to me to be a very interesting place to visit on the island. As you can see in the image, this beach is not sandy but full of small white popcorn-shaped stones. Surely you have not seen anything like it in your life before!

Here comes the sad part about visiting this beach. It seems that many tourists lack respect for incredible places like this one and decide to take some of the stone home. Please don’t be one of those people.

How to get to Popcorn Beach, Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura’s popcorn beach is located in the north of the island. In order to visit the beach, you will have to follow the dirt trail that connects Corralejo with Majanicho. You can go from this first town, which is 5 kilometers from the famous beach.

8. Mal Nombre Beach, golden sand and turquoise water

Mal Nombre

Let’s return to the Jandía peninsula, this time to talk about Mal Nombre Beach. This beach with golden white sand and turquoise waters is one of the best beaches in Fuerteventura for swimming. It is not one of the most visited beaches on the island. However, in my opinion, it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura.

Something that really caught my attention at Mal Nombre Beach were the black rock cliffs located next to the shore. Apart from creating a very nice scenery, they shield you very well from the wind, which is great in a place like Fuerteventura.

How to get to Mal Nombre Beach

From the FV-2 motorway, you just have to take the “Mal Nombre” exit and go down to the beach’s parking lot, which is located next to it.

9. Ojos Beach, discover its secret cave

Playa de Ojos

At the southernmost tip of the Jandía peninsula, you’ll find Ojos Beach, a pristine and wild beach that cannot be left out of this list of best beaches in Fuerteventura. This small beach is only about 70 meters long, but don’t be fooled by its size. It has white sand, blue waters and, in addition, it is sheltered by small cliffs. A true beauty!

It is not an ideal beach to go swimming since the currents are strong, but I do recommend visiting the beach, going down and looking for its secret cave.

How to get to Ojos Beach

To get to Ojos Beach, you first have to get to the town of Morro Jable. From there you will have to travel along a dirt road for about 24 kilometers.

10. Ajuy Beach, black sand beach in Fuerteventura

Beach in Ajuy

Ajuy Beach is one of the most beautiful black sand beaches in Fuerteventura. The contrast of the blue water, the white foam and the dark sand create a combination of colors that will surely maze you. The fishermen’s houses located around it also create a beautiful scenery. In addition, it is surrounded by cliffs, which only adds extra magic and beauty to this place.

In fact, through a path on the cliff located in the northern part of this beach, you can get to the famous Ajuy Caves. These caves are of great importance as they are the oldest geological formations in the Canary Islands. The path to reach the caves is also beautiful, offering attractive views of the sea.

Where to stay in Fuerteventura to visit the best beaches

The most spectacular beaches in Fuerteventura are distributed throughout the island. However, we can see that a large part is located either in the extreme north of the island or in the Jandía peninsula. For this reason, if one of the main reasons for visiting Fuerteventura is visiting beaches, I recommend staying in one of the following locations:

If you are interested in knowing more areas and hotels on the island, I recommend reading my articles on where to stay in Fuerteventura and the best boutique hotels in Fuerteventura.
