1. Ribadesella, one of the most beautiful towns to stay in Asturias

Ribadesella is one of the most beautiful villages to stay in in Asturias. It is located on the eastern coast, bordering the mouth of the river Sella.
Especially in spring and summer, this coastal town boasts a great atmosphere. Besides, did you know that it is the goal of a well-known canoeing competition? The International Descent of the Sella is held on the first Saturday of every August.
On the other hand, Ribadesella has all the necessary services to enjoy a pleasant stay. You will find numerous restaurants, ice cream parlors, stores, and tour agencies.
Not to mention everything you can do in Ribadesella. Be sure to discover its historic center, stroll along the Paseo Agustín de Argüelles Marina, and walk to the Ermita de La Guía. You will also be very close to Acantilados del Infierno cliffs, which can be reached by walking along the coast.
Near Ribadesella you can do activities such as visiting the Tito Bustillo Cave, the Cuevona de Cuevas del Agua, or the Mirador del Fitu viewpoint. Then, towards the east, in about 25 minutes by car, you will reach Llanes. To the west, also about 20-25 minutes by car, you will reach Colunga and Lastres.

Llanes is one of those places in Asturias that you just can’t miss. This charming seaside town is famous for its dramatic coastline, and there are plenty of promenades where you can enjoy the sea breeze, the scent of salt in the air, and the peaceful atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and just take it all in.
If you’ve only got a day here, make sure to stroll along the Paseo de San Pedro. It’s an absolute must in Llanes. Wandering through the historic center is another highlight, with spots like the Tower of Llanes, the Church of Santa María, the port, and the quirky Cubes of Memory adding to the town’s character.
Llanes is also a beach lover’s paradise. You’ll find El Sablón Beach right in the heart of the old town, and just a short trip away are stunning beaches like Toró, Gulpiyuri, Torimbia, Poo, and Ballota. There’s no shortage of sandy spots to relax on.
All in all, Llanes is the perfect base if you’re looking to explore some of the most beautiful places in Asturias. It’s got everything: nature, breathtaking coastal walks, and gorgeous beaches. Plus, it’s close enough to visit other lovely towns like Ribadesella and Lastres.

3. Cudillero, one of the most beautiful villages in Spain

One of the most charming villages of Asturias, and we could say of Spain, is Cudillero. This fishing village with colorful houses is a real wonder.
I recommend you walk through the streets of this picturesque place starting with the Plaza de la Marina, where you can have a drink in one of its terraces. Then start to climb, getting lost among its viewpoints until you reach the Mirador de la Garita, one of the best places to see in Cudillero.
Near Cudillero, I advise you to visit places like Cabo Vidio (spectacular), La Concha de Artedo Beach, and El Silencio Beach. The cities of Aviles, Oviedo, and Gijon are also within easy driving distance.
Staying in the surroundings of this town is a great idea, especially if you want to focus on the west coast of Asturias. In addition, you will be able to enjoy a charming seaside environment.

4. Cangas de Onis, town between the sea and the mountains

If you prefer to stay in a village further inland, I recommend Cangas de Onis, a town full of history, perfect for exploring the rest of the region. Cangas de Onis was the capital of the Kingdom of Asturias until 774. One of the most famous places is the Roman Bridge.
From Cangas de Onis, you can make excursions to Ribadesella, Cabrales or the Mirador de Pedro Udaondo. Although one of the main reasons why many people decide to stay in this town is its proximity to Covadonga Lakes. You can visit this places on your own or by booking this day tour: Lakes of Covadonga guided day trip.
Whether you want to visit some of the must-see places on the coast of Asturias or inland, Cangas de Onis is one of the best options to stay in Asturias due to its charm and, above all, its strategic location.

Its streets are steep and narrow, besides being cobbled. Be sure to take a stroll along the port or climb to the hermitage of San Roque to enjoy beautiful views.

The Asturian capital can also be a great option if you want to stay in a central area that offers a wide variety of plans.
In Oviedo you will find a charming medieval old town, which can boast an exceptional atmosphere both day and night. Apart from being a city with great attractions, such as the Cathedral, El Fontán Market, Alfonso II El Casto Square or its incredible gastronomy, Oviedo can be the perfect base to visit Asturias.
If you decide to visit this city, I recommend you to read my article about where to stay in Oviedo. The two best options are the old town or the center. Although if you have a car, any accommodation with parking will be a great option.

Frequently asked questions about where to stay in Asturias
Below, I answer several questions you may have about accommodation in Asturias in a clear and direct way.
Where is the best area to stay in Asturias?
The best area to choose accommodation in Asturias depends largely on what you plan to do. It’s not the same if you’re looking for coastal experiences, mountain hikes, or if you want to visit a variety of places versus focusing on relaxation and enjoyment.
That said, of all the areas I’ve recommended, if I had to choose just one, I would opt for Llanes. The surroundings are incredible, and you can enjoy the stunning coastline, with its beaches and cliffs. Plus, in about 45 minutes, you can reach the Picos de Europa.
Where to stay in Asturias to see it all?
If you want to stay in a place that’s close to everything in Asturias, you’ll first need to consider how much time you have at your disposal. If you don’t have many days, it may not be enough to cover the whole region, so you should focus on one area and get to know it well.
Another thing to think about is whether you prefer to stay in one hotel for your entire trip or if splitting your stay between at least a couple of hotels would be more convenient. You might want to spend some nights on the east coast and others on the west coast.
For a central location, I would recommend staying around Gijón. Villaviciosa, a bit closer to the east coast, can also serve as a good base town for exploring Asturias.
Where to stay in Asturias with children?
If you’re traveling with your family and young children, I’d recommend Ribadesella as a great place to base yourself. It’s a quiet area, yet lively at the same time. The beaches are safe and perfect for swimming, and the location is excellent.
Where to stay to visit Asturias and Cantabria?
For those combining their trip to Asturias with a visit to Cantabria, which is a popular option, it’s best to find a central place to stay that allows easy access to both regions. I would suggest staying in Llanes. Check out the available hotels in Llanes.
If you’re also visiting Cantabria, don’t miss this blog post on the best areas to stay in Cantabria.
