Things to do in Oviedo, Spain

Despite being a relatively small city in size, it offers everything necessary for a modern life without giving up its essence, history, and characteristics of the north.

Oviedo is the capital of Asturias, which makes it the geographical, university, religious, political, and administrative center of the autonomous community. It is home to the headquarters of all the official bodies of the community, and, in addition, the Princess of Asturias Awards are held here every year.

The European Commission says that it is one of the cities with the highest quality of life in our continent, something that is made possible every day by its more than 200,000 inhabitants that give shelter to locals and visitors (it is the second most populated city in Asturias after Gijón).

Now, with a few more facts about the city, it’s time to start with everything there is to see in Oviedo. Of course, if you wish to visit the city, which I always recommend, book a free guided tour to discover this city. This free tour of the city is great. It has a duration of 2 hours, and you choose the price.

1. Oviedo Cathedral

Oviedo Cathedral

One of the places I liked the most in my recent visit to the city was the beautiful Cathedral of Oviedo. Cathedrals are always a must in any visit to a city, and here it could not be less so.

Known as the Holy Basilica Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador, it is one of the most recognized and emblematic monuments of the city. Just by seeing it, you will discover its imposing presence created through the different architectural styles.

To give you an idea of how relevant it is, it is also colloquially known as Sancta Ovetensis because of the quantity and quality of relics it contains in its interior. Built throughout the eighth century, it is located in the heart of the old town of Oviedo, so you will find it on your route. You cannot miss it beyond the religious theme.

The usual visiting hours are Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (July and August until 19:00h). The price of the general admission is 8€.

2. Alfonso II El Casto Square, the best place to visit in Oviedo

Alfonso II El Casto Square

The Plaza de Alfonso II El Casto is one of the most representative of Oviedo, as it is located next to the cathedral, in the very center of the city.

It is named in honor of Alfonso II, an Asturian king nicknamed “El Casto” (it is easy to deduce why) and portrays much of the history of the city around it, as on it are located important historical buildings such as the Palace of Valdecarzana and Heredia, declared a Historic Artistic Monument, and the Casa de la Rua, or the Palace of the Marquises of Santa Cruz de Marcenado.

We spent a long time sitting on one of its benches, watching what was happening around us and witnessing the daily life of locals and tourists passing by.

📲 If you want to have internet in Spain and your mobile plan doesn’t include data in this country, you can buy a card on arrival or, something a little more expensive but more convenient, buy before your trip an Holafly eSIM. You can purchase it here 5% cheaper. You will have internet from the moment you land in Spain so you won’t waste a single minute at your destination!

3. Fontan Square and El Fontan Market

Fontan market

Walking through the center of Oviedo, we find one of the busiest and most popular places in the city, the Mercado El Fontán. Do not hesitate to go inside and see the different stalls of local products and, why not, buy something.

Very close to the market is the Plaza del Fontán. It is a square of rectangular design (something very curious for a square) and owes its name to the spring source (fontán) that long ago filled the lagoon that rested on that land.

From Fontan Square, you can also access the beautiful Plaza Daoíz y Velarde. There you will find several historic buildings and a couple of terraces where you can have a drink.

4. Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias

The Museum of Fine Arts of Oviedo is a must-visit for art lovers, but it’s also an excellent stop for those who may not typically focus on art. The building itself is a masterpiece worth exploring.

This museum houses an impressive collection spanning from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. You’ll find a variety of artistic styles and creative movements, showcased in both its permanent collection and its temporary, rotating exhibitions.

The museum is open:

  • Tuesday to Friday: 10:30 AM–2:00 PM and 4:30 PM–8:30 PM
  • Saturdays: 11:30 AM–2:00 PM and 5:00 PM–8:00 PM
  • Sundays and holidays: 11:30 AM–2:30 PM

In July and August, the schedule changes slightly, so it’s best to check their official website for updated hours. Admission is free.

5. Statues of Oviedo

Exploring Oviedo’s historic center is even more enjoyable when you take the time to spot the numerous statues scattered throughout the city. Oviedo has a special fondness for these sculptures—there are over 100 of them, each honoring famous figures or beloved characters.

Some of the most iconic include La Regenta in Plaza de la Catedral, Woody Allen on Milicias Nacionales Street, and the charming Mafalda, a replica of the one in Argentina, sitting casually on a bench in San Francisco Park. These are just a few of the surprises you’ll come across while wandering the city’s charming streets.

🏥 Remember it is very important to purchase travel insurance for Spain if you don’t have medical coverage in this country. I always use and recommend Heymondo, where I can offer you your travel insurance 5% cheaper. I recommend this company to travel to any destination but especially Spain because it is a Spanish company so I assure you that you will be in the best hands.

6. Constitution Square

In Oviedo we can go from square to square and from statue to statue. The Plaza de la Constitución is another of the most charismatic places in the city. It is located between Peso Street, Sol Street, and Cimadevilla Street. It is a relevant place because it houses the City Hall of Oviedo and the Church of San Isidoro El Real.

Any of its terraces are a great place to have a drink and rest before continuing to discover the must-sees of Oviedo in one day.

7. Campoamor Theater

For all those who love art, culture, or even science, the Campoamor Theater is well known. It is the place where the internationally renowned Princess of Asturias Awards are held and presented every autumn.

Its beautiful facade, as well as its richly decorated interior, place this theater among the most visited and beautiful in Spain. Its program is very varied, and if you have the opportunity, be sure to attend a performance.

8. Trascorrales Square

Trascorrales Square is easily one of the most charming corners in Oviedo. Its name comes from its history, back when merchants and their carriages would pass through, filling the square with life and trade. Today, you can still feel echoes of that bustling past, especially with La Lechera (The Milkmaid) sculpture standing proudly at its center, a tribute to its commercial roots.

You’ll also find the Trascorrales Exhibition Hall here, surrounded by plenty of lively bars and restaurants. It’s the perfect spot to relax, grab a bite, and soak up the local atmosphere. What more could you ask for?

🍽️ As for lunch or dinner, there are many restaurants where you can eat well. Some that are in the historic center and look very good are El Mono que lee, Casa Fermín, Restaurante Ca’Suso, La Mar del Medio or La Finca Sidrería Agrobar.

9. Archaeological Museum of Asturias

Archaeology is fundamental to understanding and comprehending where we come from. For this reason, the Archaeological Museum of Asturias is an essential stop if you are interested in exploring the past.

It is a cultural treasure that offers a fascinating window into the past of all of Asturias. It is housed in a majestic 16th-century building, the Cloister of San Vicente. In the museum you will find a large collection of artifacts and archaeological objects from a wide range of time: from prehistory to the Middle Ages as it passed through Asturias.

10. Campo de San Francisco

Another place that we did not miss in our one-day tour of Oviedo was the Campo de San Francisco, a beautiful urban park located in the heart of the city and that represents a piece of nature in the middle of the asphalt.

It has a large area, more than 90,000 square meters and for those who live there, it is really a fundamental lung that helps them to oxygenate the city. The highlights of the park are its large green spaces, fountains, ponds and paths full of trees perfect for a pleasant walk or a little disconnection.

The park itself is a scenic wonder and in it you will find monuments, sculptures and historical buildings very relevant and representative. Do not miss the statue of Mafalda! You will find her sitting on one of the benches in San Francisco Park.

11. Visit one of the cider houses in Gascona street

The Boulevard of Cider, as Gascona Street is also known, is famous for its many cider bars. What a delight it is to enjoy a good cider in Asturias—how could it be any other way? And what better to accompany your cider than a delicious Asturian specialty, such as a cachopo, a rich Cabrales cheese, or some of the region’s exquisite sausages?

We ended our visit to the city on this vibrant street, and it was the perfect choice. We visited Sidrería Tierra Astur Gascona, and it did not disappoint.

12. Santa Maria del Naranco Church

Santa María del Naranco Church
Santa Maria del Naranco Church

Leaving the squares and statues behind, we enter the sacred art of the city of Oviedo. And here it is not a matter of religious beliefs but to contemplate the important art and care of the architecture of these impressive buildings of the city.

The Church of Santa Maria del Naranco, located on the outskirts of the city, on the southern slope of Mount Naranco, is exceptional and very, very curious. It is an ancient palace built by King Ramiro I, back in 842, with a very specific architectural style, called Asturian or Ramirense art (pre-Romanesque).

The location is unique, and from there you can enjoy spectacular views of the whole area.

13. Church of San Miguel de Lillo

The Church of San Miguel de Lillo, built by the same king, Ramiro I, at the same time and with the same architectural style, is situated on the same mountain, Mount Naranco, just a few meters away. In 1985 it was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

It is worth visiting both churches because they are very close to each other, and the truth is that they are beautiful. There is little room for parking, and the stretch of road next to them is forbidden, so keep that in mind.

14. San Julian de los Prados Church

On the outskirts of the historic center, you will find the San Julián de los Prados Church, one of the most representative of the city. It is the oldest and largest preserved Pre-Romanesque church. It was built during the reign of Alfonso II the Chaste (very important for the region) during the years 791-842.

Its central nave is impressive, since it has the peculiarity that it rises without columns or arches reaching the ceiling. The resulting interior space will captivate you. You can see it with a guided tour that explains more about the building or on your own. The general admission is priced at 3 €.

💡 Beyond visiting the most touristic places in Oviedo, there are a few other places that are definitely worth checking out if you have some extra time. You can jot them down for a future visit or add them to your plans now. For fans of speed, the Fernando Alonso Museum is a must-see. Then there’s the ‘Skate Church,’ an old church-turned-urban art space that’s definitely unique. If you’re in the mood to unwind, the Balneario de las Caldas offers a peaceful escape with its soothing thermal waters.
