INDONESIA TRAVEL GUIDE

Plan your trip to Indonesia

Indonesia is located in Southeast Asia, between the Indian and Pacific oceans. This collection of more than 17,000 islands hides many natural wonders. In recent years it has become one of the most visited countries in Asia. Places like Lombok, the Gili Islands, Komodo, Flores, Borneo and Raja Ampat attract many tourists every year.

However, there is an island in Indonesia that stands out above the rest. I am talking about Bali! Unlike the rest of the country which is Muslim, Bali has its own religion, Balinese Hinduism. Religion plays a primary role on the island’s culture, which you can see in its temples, ceremonies and offerings.

PLACES TO VISIT IN INDONESIA

Tips for every destination

There are so many places to visit in Indonesia. Indonesia stands out for its incredible nature. However, the temples in Bali, along with other temples in the country, such as Prambanan and Borobudur, located on the island of Java, are also very important.

Bali is one of the most popular destinations in Indonesia. Some of the tourist attractions on the island are the waterfalls, beaches and rice fields. However, the island’s culture is also very interesting. Gastronomy is also a strong point. You will find numerous restaurants of all kinds on the island.

Nusa Penida, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan are located off the coast of Bali. You must visit these three pristine islands with spectacular beaches.

Lombok is located 100 km east of Bali. Lombok is also one of the most visited islands in Indonesia. Off the coast of Lombok you can visit the Gili Islands: Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan.

Other interesting destinations to visit in Indonesia are Komodo, Flores and Raja Ampat; one of the best diving places in the world.

Below you can find my blog posts about the different places in Indonesia.

BALI

Bali is one of the most magical islands you will ever visit in the world. Its incredible nature, tranquility, culture and people, to mention just a few things, make travelers visit Bali again and again.

People are drawn to the culture and religion in Bali. Despite being in a Muslim country, Bali has its own religion, Balinese Hinduism. Faith plays a major role in Balinese society and in the daily life of the locals. Did you know that Bali has more than 20,000 temples?

Some of the best places to visit in Bali are, Pura Agung Besakih, the Tegallalang rice fields, the Pura Tanah Lot, the Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, the Sekumpul waterfall, the Pura Tirta Empul, Amed, the Nusa islands, the Tibumana waterfall, the Pura Lempuyang, etc. The list is endless!

AMED

Amed is a small town located in the northeast of Bali, Indonesia. Although it is also a well-known tourist destination, it is less crowded than other places on the island, like Canggu or Ubud. For that reason, in Amed, you can still breathe a little more authenticity and tranquility. Its great attractions are its beaches of calm waters, ideal for snorkeling, and its beautiful views of Mount Agung.

CANGGU

Canggu is one of the most popular tourist spots in Bali. Some of its attractions are its beaches, ideal for surfing and watching the sunset, and its cafes and restaurants. That being said, it is a go-to place for many tourists who visit Bali, especially digital nomads and people who have decided to make of this place their permanent base.

UBUD

Ubud is probably one of the most well-known places in Indonesia. As soon as you set foot in this area of the island, you will realize that it is Bali’s cultural and spiritual hub. But you’ll also find cascades, rice fields, and lots of monkeys waiting for you in addition to temples and museums.

ULUWATU

Uluwatu is a paradise for those who travel to Bali in search of the best beaches and waves. The southern region of Bali is the ideal location for swimming in turquoise waters and fine sand beaches. Plus, from its many cliffs, you may take in breathtaking views of the ocean. Make sure Uluwatu is on your itinerary when visiting Indonesia!

NUSA ISLANDS

The Nusa Islands are an archipelago belonging to the province of Bali. It consists of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan. If you are going to travel to Indonesia and are looking for amazing landscapes, I recommend visiting Nusa Penida. If you prefer to spend a few days relaxing, then I recommend Nusa Lembongan and, above all, Nusa Ceningan.

LOMBOK

Lombok is quickly becoming one of the most popular places to visit in Indonesia. Lombok is much less explored and underdeveloped than Bali. You will find numerous cliffs, waterfalls, beaches and mountains.

Some of the best places to visit in Lombok are Mount Rinjani, Kuta Lombok, Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls, Senggigi and of course the Gili Islands.

GILI ISLANDS

The Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air) are located off the coast of northwestern Lombok. They are a true paradise for those looking for relaxing days, snorkeling with turtles, watching incredible sunsets, enjoying spectacular beaches, and, above all, enjoying the small pleasures of life.

The 3 islands are very similar yet very different. In this guide to Indonesia, I explain everything you need to know to plan your trip to this destination in the country.
